Looking down from up in the trees, the palm thatched roof of the cane-sided school hut, with an Ecuadorian flag on a pole, and the students and teacher in front of the building.

Rainforest Treasure and many of our friends have pitched in to support the new school in the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle, Escuela Sumak Allpa.  The elementary school, Escuela Sumak Allpa, is in the Amazon in Ecuador.  This private jungle school was built by Hector Vargas, an indigenous guide and anthropologist, to serve the children on the south side of the Rio Napo.  These children (about 19 at present) previously had to cross the Rio Napo to attend school.  The river is quite dangerous in rainy season, and the children stayed home nearly half the year.  The government will not fund this school, so private funds are needed to pay the teacher and supplies.

A ground-level close-up shot of part of the school building, with the flag, the students and teacher in front. The students are ages seven to 14, the girls wearing skirts and blouses, boys in pants and short with tee shirts. The flag is yellow, royal blue and red. The school was certified and opened with 13 children on September 18, 2006.  The school has grown to 19 children.  This picture was taken on the first day of school.
The desks and benches were hand made by the local community.  The children are very proud of their new school! Students eating lunch on a rough board table and bench, inside the school hut. Rough lumber desks with benches are also visible.

Spanish language thank-you letter written by the oldest student, Geovanni, at 14 year old girl.
This letter is from one of the students thanking us for the donation of the motor for their boat, which they use as a "school bus".
